about

battlehelm.com review by Anders Ekdahl:
"Back in 2016 I interviewed this band. I never got around to reviewing their album back then but I liked what I heard then. And I like what I hear on this EP from 2013. If you are not familiar with THE GRAND ASTORIA I can tell you that they are like a cross between Black Sabbath, KYUSS and Monster Magnet. Equal parts stoner, psychedelia and heavy metal mixed to a brew that is so tasteful that you just want more and more of it. A really cool band that grooves like a beast. If you don’t like this you better reboot your taste. This is some cool stuff."

+Anders made interview:
"THE GRAND ASTORIA might get in trouble if they ever grow big because of their name but until that happens please let us all help build their name. © 2016 Anders Ekdahl

As I am not at all familiar with your band perhaps you could introduce it?
– The Grand Astoria plays very nice mixture of all good things that happened to rock music during last 40 years. We released 6 album, many EPs, splits and singles. I love to describe our style as tripped out psychedelic fuzz rock having sex with heavy metal. It pretty much sums up everything

How hard was it for you guys to pick a name? What had that name have to have to fit your music?
– Not hard at all. It just picked us

What band(s) was it that turned you on to the kind of prog/rock/metal you play? What inspires you today?
– There was no particular band. I love millions of bands/artists – from John Coltrane to Morbid Angel, from Camel to Black Flag. Same guys inspire me today. From relatively recent discoveries – Squadra Omega from Italy and Seven Impale from Norway

What came first; the band name or the sound? How did you settle on a sound?
– The music was first. Then there was the name obviously.

Is digital killing the album format? Is there anything good with releasing single tracks only?
– I don’t think so. I am feeling quite comfortable in a modern day reality. We are basically album-oriented band but as I said before we produced few singles which didn’t fit our program releases

What part does art work and lay out play when you release new recordings? How do you best catch people’s attention
– It’s very important and we are blessed to have a very good illustrator who works with us – Sophia Miroedova. I consider her a part of the band.

Has social media re-written the rules on how to promote a cd? Or do you go about doing promotion the same way? Touring, word of mouth, paper ads etc?
– Altogether. We are 100 % DIY band, we have friendly labels in Berlin (Setalight) and Italy (Vincebus Eruptum) who print our LPs but I am promoting the band myself. We don’t have any booking agency or manager. I carry all this on my own shoulders though I am trying to find a proper person to share responsibilities.

Do you feel like you are a part of a scene, locally, nationally and internationally?
– Not really. We are pretty distant from all these stoner/doom/prog/whatever movements. We are trying to build our own fan base. It’s very small but growing

How much of a touring band are you? Is touring/gigging still a great way of spreading the word of the band?
– We are touring a lot. As much as visa rules allow us. I am ready to go everywhere

What will the future bring?
– Peace, love and heavy metal to everyone"

They sold their souls for rock'n'roll.

Sehr positive Eindrücke hinterlassen die zwei Instrumentals: „Deathmarch“ und „Aelita, The Queen Of Mars“.

dprp.net review by Andy Read:
"Intrigued by one judgement that described the music of The Grand Astoria as "tripped-out psychedelic fuzz rock having sex with heavy metal", I thought it would be worth delving into three more selections from their back catalogue.

From 2013 The Death March EP is a showcase for the band's stoner and doom leanings. There are other elements but they add more in the way of detail than essence for the five tracks. It is the heaviest and most focused of these three releases."

Polish kvlt.pl review by Dominik Dwornicki:
"Ocena 7/10

Dwa z pięciu utworów są instrumentalne – tytułowy Deathmarch z garścią ciężkich mięsistych, bujających riffów, oraz Aelita, The Queen of Mars z masą połamanych rytmów i małymi space wstawkami. Obydwa kawałki cieszą organ słuchowy rewelacyjnym wykonaniem oraz aranżacjami.

Pozostałe trzy to rozpoczynający ep-kę Now or Never, World Without a Smile i kończący No Way Out. Trzecim, i jak napisałem wyżej kończącym tę ep-kę kawałkiem jest No Way Out. No Way Out przesiąknięty jest wibracjami tego bandu.

Mnie osobiście czegoś w tym brakuje i późniejsza twórczość The Grand Astoria trafia do mnie bardziej."

Japan masterofslach.blog114.fc2.com review by mossgreen/

Russian metallibrary.ru review by Lightbringer:

“World Without A Smile”, Из пяти представленных композиций две – инструментальные, это энергичная, немного металлизированная, дорожка “Deathmarch” и научно-фантастическая space prog композиция “Aelita, The Queen of the Mars” с характерными фанатичными соло и виртуозно скроенными риффами.

farfrommoscow.com review by David
"The Grand Astoria are from Saint Petersburg and specialize in a form of southern or stoner rock, despite their home address in the world's most northerly metropolis. Discussions of the band often move from a few proudly-declared American references – "Cacti, American cars, skateboards, Texas, tractors..." – to an international list so long it's eventually dismissed as unimportant. Amid those nods towards people and places, one or two stable categories are slowly applied to the outfit's four members: Kamil' Sharapodinov (vocals/guitar), Igor' Suvorov (guitar), Nikolai Kunavin (drums/"+ nerves"!), and Farid Azizov.

The most common parallels used by foreign critics when talking of The Grand Astoria are slacker rock of the 1990s and, in the words of one Luxembourg author, "handmade vintage psychedelia" of earlier decades.

The band just announced a new EP, "Deathmarch." It appears on the heels of support from Western anglo-bloggers who declare The Grand Astoria "a bloody under-appreciated band, perhaps because of their desire to straddle traditional generic boundaries - and fan bases." Sharapodinov recently concurred: "I can't say that classic metal-heads dig what we do. The same goes for our punks. I even heard that Russia's community here doesn't like the fact we tag our music as 'punk.' Personally, I don't care. 'Punk' for me is an attitude and ability to do what you want..." Hence the Astoria's current self-definition as: "Tripped-out psychedelic fuzz rock... having sex with heavy metal."

The need to move beyond generic convention has, it seemed, also created the need to work further from home. "We're really trying to move beyond the limits of Europe. We constantly get mail from South America: people know and love us there... I figured it would be great to release a split EP with a band from that part of the world... [For the same reason] we've got something coming out on Russian and Chilean labels simultaneously. It'll include roughly twenty-five minutes of material from each group."

Dreams of international collaboration, however, can run into bureaucratic issues: "There are always problems with visas. We set up twelve gigs in America last year, but nothing ever happened - 'cos the visas were refused. It was upsetting, yet we keep moving forward. There are places much more interesting - like South America!""
