полностью resurgam.ucoz.ru/blog/soom_2018_dzhebars_rbf_019_724_ji_soom_djbrs_vncd0008_zavisimyj_lejbl/2019-11-16-934

warm_tulup This track is a borderline between more classic doom/sludge sound of first part of this release and outstanding heavy psychodelia of the rest. From this point music will lead you to the end of story through insanity of poisoned mind, guiding step by step on the Kharkov's longest and scariest street, where burning eyes stares at you from darkness and panic rise inside like tsunami wave that crushes everything on its way.

about

A lo-fi heavy juggernaut Soom which won the attention of many lovers of low-tuned, dark, vicious, filthy, shake-the-fucking-ground metal are released their second albumon the 20th of April.

Soom, who have previously combined heavy weirdness, hypnotic rhythms, otherworldly chanting and ‘recorded in a cavern’ sound with an ancient mysticism grounded in Ukrainian folk, are ready to go further and project the spirit of their native city through unearthly soundscapes of their sophomore album.

Preserving the traditions of the first album, Soom creates a conceptual story, more uncanny in “spoken words”, more chaotic and deeper in music, combining doom metal with dark side of rave and Slobozhansky folk. The result of this mixture is unpredictable, so make sure you are ready for immersion.

metal-archives.com review by NausikaDalazBlindaz:
"Running at 74+ minutes, "Djebars" is a demanding album mixing molten-lava sludge doom, stoner metal, Ukrainian folk, a hard edge and plenty of malevolent atmosphere and a sense of dread. Here is one of those recordings that should come with a health warning not to drive, mix with alcohol and/or strong intoxicants, or listen to late on Friday or Saturday nights on your own just after you have been stood up by your girlfriend or boyfriend who kept tagging you along as long as your hip-pocket was full. This album is a complete immersive experience: those rolling riff slabs, brimming with slow intense and unbearable heat, bringing dark unspeakable thoughts, will thunder over you and encase you in thick layers of black evil. Without doubt, the thick grinding subterranean guitars, deep and booming, are the best thing here: the drums bravely hold their own with a hard-hitting sound that emphasises the intense driving nature of the guitars and bass. Vocals are just as deep, even ogre-like, and the possibility that Soom have invoked supernatural beings of pre-Christian Slav times becomes real.

This is a conceptual album which explains the long, mostly instrumental tracks that more or less bleed into one from the other with short interludes that may feature spoken-word recordings and experimental ambient music (like "Laughter of the Night Virgins" and "Feng Shui Souvenir", the latter also including a fast techno beat) - so it's best heard in one hit, after which a very long recovery period may be required before you play again. In spite of the long playing time, during most of which your ears and the space between them are continually being bludgeoned to the point of numbness by wave after crashing concrete wave of deep low-end bass crumble and occasional hysterical lead guitar, this music is never boring: the musicians take you on a long torturous journey beyond our material universe and their enthusiasm and utter faith in what they're doing and where we're all going are infectious and carry us all along. In the last track of the album proper (this is "Wheelchair"), the music speeds up and becomes truly unhinged and chaotic.

On top of all this, the band includes two bonus tracks "Nagno" and "Panic Attack" which, depending on the state of your nerves by the time you get this far, are completely bat-shit crazy or sheer deranged genius in extending what the rest of the album before had built up to. While most listeners might be happy going as far as "Wheelchair" and leaving the album at that, they really should give these bonus songs their time in the spotlight if only to hear Soom playing fast and crazed.

The album deserves much more publicity than it has had so far - the musicians have put their hearts and souls into this work and they have really gone out far on a limb with extended improvisations and hypnotic music.

Soom's second album "Djebars" was brought to my attention by Anton Kitaev whose Moscow-based label NoName666 stocks this album as well as several others in the psych / stoner / doom genre. Little did I know - until I started checking out Soom's history and discography - that one of the band's members, Amorth, is a veteran of Kharkiv's underground BM scene, playing in Astrofaes (along with Thurios of Drudkh) among other bands! As the saying goes, we live in a small world indeed. And it's probably time I did come back to Kharkiv to review a recording by a band from that city after years of wandering all over the globe hearing out other bands that would otherwise remain in MA's Orphans Corner of lovable yet unloved bands stuck in the darkness (of a sort no-one loves, not that other kind of darkness that inspires great dark music) with no reviews."

disagreement.net review by Pascal Thiel:
"Ukrainian sludge stoner doom trio Soom doesn’t fuck around on their second longplayer Djebars. Although the titles are all in Ukrainian, a language in Cyrillic letters completely unreadable for me, the band was nice enough to provide translations for the different songs. Soom’s approach is more extreme and less song-oriented than what we are used from most other bands.

Take for instance the nearly eight-minute-long intro Above the Sequoias: Origin, an ambient piece of music with some folk elements that strangely enough, despite its length, never overstays its welcome. Instead it’s setting the mood for what is to follow. The first regular track Burned Out is an eleven-minute-long behemoth with ultra-heavy guitar and a pounding rhythm section. The vocals are rather few and in between, and once they appear, they are like gang shouts that work rather well over the brutal music. The only complaint I have here, as on every other song, is the weak drum production. The snare sounds just too hollow and piercing, and the cymbals are drowning in oversaturated noise. Most songs are separated by one-minute short interludes that are a good idea as they give the listener a moment to breathe before the next monster track is assaulting you. Under A Gleam The Dream Is Hidden makes it even over thirteen minutes and comes with a totally distorted bass guitar that sounds like early Type O Negative on an extreme doom trip. The album’s last three tracks are a trifecta of bliss. Wheelchair is a strange sludge doom piece with some folk elements, Nagno is a twelve-and-a-half-minute long beast with dark conjuring vocals and an overall hypnotic atmosphere. The concluding Panic Attack is at five and a half minutes a comparatively short piece and sounds like a doom tribute to Motörhead and the Ramones. Totally unfitting but showing that these guys are open for everything.

If you like your sludge metal slow and extreme, Soom from Kharkiv are the right band for you. There are moments of incredible excellence, and despite its generous length of seventy-four minutes, Djebars never feels too long. I’d have wished for a somewhat more professional production, especially when it comes to the drums, because I am convinced that a tighter and more focused sound would have lent these monster tracks even more punch and aggression."

doomedandstoned.com review by Billy Goate:
“It’s like nothing you’re hearing out of the West right now in doom circles. A kind of psychedelic nightmare, with strong bass lines, devastating low-end, caustic shreds, and that haunting singing that make you think of some insane monk singing in an empty cathedral during the witching hour. This is going to be something of an Alice in Wonderland experience, folks.

Where to begin with SOOM? The band isn’t exactly a household name, not even within doom circles (unfortunately). But it should be. It really should. We’ve been tracking Soom (who I once depticted as “a haunting, dirgy doom band”) since their very first release, a three-way split in 2013 with Russian sludgers Pressor and the now defunct Lewiston, Idaho band Diazepam. Hey, international relationships may be complicated, but that doesn’t mean metal has to be!

I just figured out where to start: Сум. That’s Cyrillic script that transliterates as “Soom” and translates in a word we can all universally related to: “Grief.” Like the emotion of grieving, Soom is complicated. We’ve been exposed to the impressive expressive range of the band in their previous opus, ‘Ніч на полонині’ (“Night on the Meadow”) in 2014. Now for their second full-length, 'Джєбарс’ (2018), the Kharkiv trio of Kova (guitar/vocals), Tomrer (bass), and Amorth (drums) push those boundaries ambitiously forward. Soom’s label, Robustfellow, does a great job of getting us ready for the esoteric baptism of sound to follow:

>Soom, who have previously combined heavy weirdness, hypnotic rhythms, otherworldly chanting and ‘recorded in a cavern’ sound with an ancient mysticism grounded in Ukrainian folk, are ready to go further and project the spirit of their native city through unearthly soundscapes of their sophomore album. The result of this mixture is unpredictable, so make sure you are ready for immersion.

That sums it up quite nicely and gives you a clue as to why I’m drawn irresistibly to the band with the motto, “Smoke Music, Listen Weed.” Today, Doomed & Stoned is proud to bring you the exclusive world premiere of Джєбарс by Soom...

There’s plenty to unpack in Soom’s sophomore record, so you’d best give ear and read along…

Now, I know what you’re all wondering: what’s up with that album title? Other than looking hella cool, something tells me there is something important about “Джебарс” that may be the key to understanding the whole album. Naturally, I found very difficult to translate on my own (well, ok, absolutely impossible – Google translate was being a bitch). Even a good friend of mind from Ukraine wasn’t entirely sure. “Why don’t you just ask the band?” she suggested. Grand idea! So I reached out to vocalist Kova for some insight.

“Джебарс,” as it turns out, is actually slang for “Djebars” or “Jabber” (as in GG Allin and the Jabbers). Of course, in English, we might take that to mean someone who talks really fast or incoherently. like he’s high and his mind is expanding. However, there’s more to this little rabbit trail. “In Kharkiv, we say Djebars to describe the Dude who smokes a lot of marijuana and listens to Soom, something like that.” In short, it’s a someone who savors “craft beer and weed and listening to slow chaos in his headphones, exhaling smoke into the Derzhprom” – that building you see on the front of album. This is going to be something of an Alice in Wonderland experience, folks.

The opening track beckons you into this world’s dark, foggy atmosphere, luring us with the emotive strains of strings and synthesizer. “Понад Секвоями: Джерело” roughly translates as “Above The Sequoias: Origin (Fountainhead)” and, indeed, it does have a rather primitive feel to it.

Towards the seven-minute mark, a narrator speaking in the native tongue speaks. I asked (nay, practically begged) Filipp Dobrov from the band’s record label, Robustfellow, (which has brought us such incredible acts as Ethereal Riffian, The Grand Astoria, and Somali Yacht Club) for a translation. “Firstly,” he cautioned, “the lyrics are strange and weird, containing lots of slang-words and double-meanings, mythological names that don’t have any translations.” This English translation, he says, doesn’t even really get close to the core.

The story begins as our protagonist, Djebars, walks aimlessly home one night. Then things get really weird and I can’t really describe it to you without sounding like a crazy person. That’s when I knew I needed to learn Ukrainian. There’s something about a forest and poison and a ransom and midwives and glue. It’s weird, man, just weird.

We aren’t given too much time to ponder the words, in any event, because the first track transitions immediately into a second. Mystical plucking send ripples through a smoke filled chamber, Kova’s guitar playing very much invokes the spirit of regional folk songs dating back centuries (Soom has been known to drawn upon them for inspiration). A gorgeously downtuned bass makes its entrance (say hi to Tomrer). A toxic snow of noise and chanting lyrics now envelop us. It’s a grief of a different sort now, one of sheer cacophony, which explains the title: Вщент (“Burned Out”). Stick around until eight minutes in and you’ll surely be rewarded with one of the most addictive sludge grooves I’ve heard in a while. Things escalate into a full frenzy, with drummer Amorth gushing a cathartic vomit of cymbals and blast beats to join Tomrer’s bass battering.

When I read on the band’s “About Us” page that their genre was rave doom. I thought it was a joke (you know, the sardonic sense of humor many doomers have, even poking fun at their own craft and trade). However, by the fourth track, “Під променем тьмяним захована мрія” (Under A Gleam The Dream Is Hidden), it all hit me like a cocktail of hallucinogens. This number, the longest of the record at thirteen minutes, is indeed trance inducing. At first, you want to dance, then you start to feel woozy, and finally sick to the pit of your stomach.

I can imagine just how powerful this music must be performed at full amplitude in a live setting. We’ve seen some evidence of this in Rita Fevraleva’s incredible photographic coverage of the annual Sludge Convention and Tune Low, Play Slow in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, which draw bands from both Russia and Ukraine.

Tomrer’s bassline arrives just in time to reel us in, and Kova’s mystical riff revives us to life, just long enough to get one more dance in – this time a more obvious illusion to the rave in the minute interlude, “Сувенір фен-шуй” (“Feng Shui Souvenir”). I bet there’s a story waiting to be told someday behind that one and perhaps one day I’ll draw the band out with some of that prime Oregon ganja and get them to tell me all about it.

Now venturing onto the B-Side of Джєбарс, we take “Полтавський Шлях” (“Poltavian Way”), which may be my fav of the record because it’s a solid, slowed-down doom drudgery. Ain’t it delicious? From what I could determine, Полтава (Poltava) is an old Ukraine city located along the Vorskla River, with a history that goes back well into the Middle Ages. During this time it was involved in, among other things, the Mongol invasion of Рѹ́сь, when it was a loose federation Slavic tribes. Whether the song is about this or the many storied events of the city’s history that might be brought to mind as one walks the path along the river, I know not. Nevertheless, you can feel the gravity of every note as the rhythmic pulse of every note gives wings to your imagination and the soaring, stinging guitar play encourages you to take flight.

A short, drunken interlude “Спокій і тиша цілодобово” (“Peace And Silence 24 Hours”) brings us to the album’s proper conclusion. “Коляска” (“Wheelchair”) was the first single that Джєбарс revealed some weeks ago, so it’s interesting to listen it now in its context. Kova tells me Коляска an “insider term for the drugs of bad quality which put you you in wheelchair, at best, or just kill you.” Not so long time ago, he continues, there was a drug called spice – “something like liquid synthetic cannabinoid.” Yeah, we had that dogshit here in the US, too, unfortunately. “You could smoke even the paper if you pour this shit on it and you got high so fast and kill your mind for an hours. It was like an more opiate than weed. So it was a bad time.” As for Kova, he sticks solely to nature. “We call it 'KЦ’ ('KaTse’)” which is “good old weed of high quality.”

Confession time: when I first heard “Коляска,” it felt a bit stressful and off-putting, juxtaposing buzzing noise, shrill feedback, and one possessed guitar with eerie eastern-style melisma with a mesmerizing drumbeat. Hearing it again, so deeply engrossed in this juggernaut of a record, and I felt as though I could be entangled in one sweaty fever dream, had I not the familiar surroundings of home to ground my sanity to.

Two bonus tracks are offered following the hefty tour de force we’ve just experienced. The first, “Наґно” (“Nagno”) appeared as a lonely single in the summer of 2016, something to tide us over then as fans anxiously awaited the band’s follow-up to that incredible first album Ніч на полонині. (“Night on the Meadow”) from 2014. The music instantly soothes our nerves from the long journey with the mystic melody making that Soom has become synonymous with in my own mind. The reverberating vocals bring us another song-chant, speaking of the “ancient knowledge of water and smoke” that brings something strange, perhaps terrible, to life.

If I was trapped in some delirious dream state by the conclusion of “Наґно,” the second bonus track, “Панічна Атака” (“Panic Attack”), makes me feel like I could be in a full-on, wide-awake, bloodlust nightmare. It’s frankly, one of the creepiest, crustiest sludge/D-beat numbers I’ve ever been a party to. The screeching vox reminded me of those moments of shrieking insanity in Skinny Puppy’s “Dig It”. After searching out the English translation, I smile to myself and said, “Yep, this song certainly did live up to its name!”

As might tell, I thoroughly enjoyed this mystical romp through the darker cultural and psychological corners of our world. The whole thing is an experience, man. It’s like nothing you’re hearing out of the West right now in doom circles. A kind of psychedelic nightmare, with strong bass lines, devastating low-end, caustic shreds, and that haunting singing that make you think of some insane monk singing in an empty cathedral during the witching hour. Beware: you just might get lost in the grooves of this record’s spin.”

Russian (language) artmageddon.net review by Oleksandr Proletarskyi:

"...
Adding the weight to the first album this new album contains 10 tracks of tortured mix made out of sludge, doom, lo fi noise and hysteria. The experience of this album is total dark ride. I love New Orleans sludge scene, but the European scene brought a lot of originality in the sludge making it even more tortured, harsh and hard to listen to. This music is not for everyones ears, but I loved it. There is some Black Flagish stuff in the song structures but it quickly changes into total doom metal or noisy passages. Vocals vary from screaming, tortured singing, whispering or just spoken word. The best time to listen to this album would be Friday or Saturday night prior to going out, because you will drink yourself to death with this music."

"Like a celestial choir celebrating the opening of a gilded portal in deepest space, the track ' Above The Sequoias: Origin' opens Soom's second full length Djebars, giving no warning whatsoever to the insanity about to begin.

Combining the bass heavy drone of Russia's Dekonstruktor with the schizophrenia of Spain's Hipoxia, Soom has created a tormented offering to a world ruled by lunacy and dementia. Mangled, psychedelic riffs are barely harnessed together by asphyxiating, coma inducing, lo fi doom and a metronomic drum beat that worms itself right into your head, vocals mimicking the chanting of a tribe of demented warrior chiefs around a long dead fire, choked in ash.

Djebars is as intricate as it is primitive, locking you in the yoke of an emotional straitjacket, consumed by a techno beat interwoven with a heart stopping bottom end.

Doom from another dimension."

Ukrainian vk.com/club149700634 (Музичне Марево) review by Артем Куз:

toiletovhell.com review for Вщент (Burned Out) video:
“Plug in and Burn out with Soom’s Bizarro New Video

Dear reader, you’ve worked hard this week. You deserve a mental voyage down the rabbit hole, and there’s no better way to do it than dropping Soom’s audio-visual acid and seeing just how deep it all goes. Today, I’m pleased as hell to take you through the looking glass of “Вщент (Burned Out).” Let’s get weird with it.

What’s that? Not hip to the Ukranian-folk-meets-stoner-doom underground rumblings of Soom? Well, buddy, have I got one hell of an introduction for you. “Вщент” is the second track from Soom’s forthcoming sophomore album, Джєбарс (Djebars),” and it’s a doozy. Combining the earth-shattering low-end rumble of the likes of Conan with the mystic fuzz of Deadthrones and the unapologetic malevolence of Bathe, the Kharkiv trio tell sonic tales of urban decay and alluring counterculture with surprisingly engaging hooks and riffs that mercifully avoid the usual pitfalls of this style of music. The drums skitter and pummel in alternating intensities, the guitars leap and drag with changing dynamics, and the mostly instrumental narrative gets a nice injection of chaos from some noisy leads and shamanic vocals. “Вщент” is a hell of a jam, from its smothering feedback to eerie atmosphere, and it’s the perfect little potion to drop you into Soom’s world.

The video, though. Ooh buddy, this is wild.

Animated by Анна Ковалевич (Anna Kovalevich) and edited by Дарья Черничкина (Daria Chernichkina), the ten-minute video for “Вщент” is a krokodil-fueled mental voyage through mixed media flashes and unsettling stock footage. Within its menagerie of oddities you’ll find paper cut-outs of skinned animals, flashes of (seemingly) USSR propaganda, and weirdo bits of flash animation that would make the Williams Street production team proud. The video spans such a wide breadth of incongruous images that it’s difficult to encapsulate everything that assaults the senses and nigh impossible to conjecture a meaning beyond, “Bad trip, man!” but it remains interesting throughout as it invokes the weirdness of late eighties and early nineties videos from Bruno Schulz and Tool.

Really, it’s the kind of thing that just needs to be experienced, so turn on, tune in, and drop out below. (Just FYI, this video features some grainy photography that might be NSFW).”

lorezine.com review by Filipe Silva:
"I remember when I first heard of Soom. Eternally searching the World Wide Web for new and exciting bands, I came across these fellas from Ukraine. Songs like Лісова пісня (Forest’s Song) and Наґно (Nagno) captivated my interest, through their use of flutes, occult-worshipping riffs and mystical chants that evoked ancestral spirits. It was as if Yob and Batushka had a child and gave it to Coven to take care of the upbringing. Their latest record Джєбарс (Djebars), released on April 20th via Robust Fellow, addicted label BNiL and Voron NEST, is a continuation of the work started by the band back in 2013. As you might have noticed, the titles of their songs are all in their own language, so, for the purposes of this review, I will be mentioning the tracks by their official English translation, provided by the band, here.

We start out with “Above The Sequoias: Origin”, a 7-minute long intro that takes us to the birth of a dense forest through a plethora of melodies. After a brief spoken excerpt at the end, the first riffs of the album can be heard on the second track, “Burned Out”. Almost immedietly, I notice that Soom’s overall lo-fi and aggressive sound is unchanged. It is an approach that many may not appreciate, but to me it was sort of expected. It has become the band’s way of doing things, their signature style, if you will.

One thing I do have a gripe with, however, are the interludes. Even though Soom makes it so that the entire album is one continuous piece, which in turn makes the interludes seem as both intro and outro to some of the tracks, it’s not something I’m very fond of. There are bands that exaggerate on the use of interludes – Gorillaz comes to mind -, but at the very least the one’s present in Djebars are not too distracting and make a little sense. I would still do away with them though.

“Under a Gleam The Dream Is Hidden” is where the band and the album are at their strongest. It shows what the band really is about and what they are capable of. As previously mentioned, the vocal style is reminiscent of bands like Yob and Batushka, and Al Kova, the vocalist, does a very good job in reminding us just that. He does give it a little twist of insanity here and there to make it more is own, which is a good thing. On “Poltavian Way” and “Wheelchair” one could say the same thing.

All in all, Djebars is a nice follow-up to the band’s previous full-lenght effort, Night of the Meadow and a more successful one too. The similarities in musical structure between songs and the excess in interludes might throw some people of, but it still remains a nice record to listen on a Sunday afternoon. Or when going on a trip, just to loosen up."

Russian (language) noizr.com review:

valleyofsteel.net review:
"Soom (or сум in Ukrainian, which roughly translates to “grief” in English) have had one prior full-length album as well as a handful of EPs and split releases since their formation in 2013. Their Djebars (Джєбарс) starts off sounding like droney, ambient doom — and then quickly devolves into grimey, sludgy noise. Always dark and often bass-centered, the album is filled with echoey and psychedelic sounds.

This way-out-there sort of material brings to mind the likes of Stangala, which is never a bad thing. Tying the whole thing together is the relentless drumbeat — usually thoroughly hypnotic and sometimes sounding almost danceable, while elsewhere as the music crescendos into the highest heights of madness, more like just random crazed bashing and smashing.

Much of the record is instrumental and expeditionary, although there are short interludes between many of the tracks that incorporate spoken word bits. These, if such a thing is possible, come across as even more echoey and psychedelic, shouted within crystalline caverns inside the recesses of the fever dream that a fever dream would have."

planetmosh.com review by Simon Bower:
"Hailing from the Ukraine, Soom are a band that many of you may be completely unfamiliar with, especially if you don’t delve into the Stoner scene that often. The band formed in 2013, and ‘Djebars’ represents their second full length release, although a couple of E.P.’s and split releases are floating around as well

So where to start with this offering then, initially I heard it described as Rave Doom, which naturally pricked my interest but to be honest that is a moniker that doesn’t do the band much justice. For sure there are dance hooks in there but on the whole they are cleverly disguised behind the cacophony and dirge more usually associated with Stoner. However, it is Soom’s visionary application that sets this album apart from the many, weaving many a surrealist stitch into the fabric of the record, combining a deliciously heavy and thick guitar sound, coupled with a bass so low it drags itself along the floor on all fours. Add to that a raw and fluid cymbal loaded drum sound and subtle and infrequent vocal and the whole thing comes together effortlessly

The incredibly atmospheric opener ‘Above The Sequoias Origin’ instantly draws you in to the bands weird and wonderful landscape. The crushing ‘Poltavian Way’ demonstrates how much ass can be kicked by this band as it throws wave after wave of sludge in unison with some immense guitar solos that just hold you rigid. ‘Wheelchair’ with its distortion overloaded intro, takes you to new depths of despair as the tormented vocal screams pain out from the speakers. Two bonus tracks are available as well in the form of ‘Nagno’ and ‘Panic Attack’, the former being simply stunning and totally mesmeric as it drains the National Grid with a power overload of subterranean riffs and hooks that knock you backwards onto the floor

‘Djebars’ is a fantastic release, being true to the core values of the genre, whilst being surprisingly melodic and accessible to a much wider audience. Well worth a listen

Recommended Track – Nagno"

gbhbl.com review:
"Preserving the traditions of the first album, Soom creates a conceptual story with Djebars. Opening with a poignant and somewhat stifling melody, it slowly opens up allowing you to breathe deeply from the cold and clean air that comes rushing in.

Combining spoken-word, chaotic doom metal and the darker side of folk. The result of this mixture is unpredictable but incredibly appealing. Burned Out alternates between a feral state and low & dirty bass-heavy melody. It’s an eye-opening listen, impossible to fully comprehend and one that leaves you feeling unsettled.

On the one hand there are tracks like Laughter Of The Night Virgins that are only there to further the albums concept. Then on the other hand there are tracks like Under A Gleam The Dream Is Hidden that come in at 13+ minutes and the 10+ minutes of Poltavian Way that take us on a whirlwind journey of oppressive doom heaviness. It’s a hell of a contrast & it may not sit that well with some.

There’s no faulting Soom’s imagination though. Djebars is an enthralling listen and splitting the epic tracks with short intermissions works to sell the concept of the album as a whole."

"A lo-fi heavy juggernaut Soom which won the attention of many lovers of low-tuned, dark, vicious, filthy, shake-the-fucking-ground metal are releasing their second album via Robustfellow Prods. on the 20th of April.
The result of this mixture is unpredictable, so make sure you are ready for immersion."

Dutch rockportaal.nl review by Pim Latuny:

A Blaze In The Northern Sky wil klinken. Terwijl er best aardige sludge nummers gespeeld worden (Under a Gleam The Dream is Hidden, Poltavian Way)

"Oh, be certain: weirdness abounds on Soom‘s new full-length, Djebars, which the Ukrainian three-piece will issue on April 20 via no fewer than four labels: Robustfellow Productions, Addicted Label , Kvlt ov I and Voron Nest, and the band could hardly be more at home in that weirdness. Enough so that I’d like to hear them do a cross-continental collaboration Queen Elephantine, just to see what comes out of it — wait until you hear “Wheelchair.” They share some of the ritualistic elements one finds in their countrymen an labelmates Ethereal Riffian, but Djebars, and Soom as whole, are on their own wavelength."

outlawsofthesun.blogspot.com review by Steve Howe:
" Джєбарс is the 2nd full length album from SOOM. This album blends Doom, Sludge, Psych, Folk and Spaced Out Sounds. it’s not the most easiest album to listen to. As there’s a lot going on with SOOM’s music. The music can be way out there and the lo-fi surroundings doesn’t help as much. Truth be told I didn’t enjoy this album at first. Mainly down to the fact there is a lot to take in.

I’m not going to do a song by song review as the album is more of a psychedelic and FUCKED UP journey where the music moves into so many different directions. SOOM are quite adapt at playing weirdly addictive drone based sounds with the folk element of their music creating an uneasy atmosphere. The heavy riffs do take time to arrive. Though when they do, SOOM unleash with a barrage of progressive sludgy riffs.

The opening track feels it was inspired by EARTH and BONG. Wait until the second song appears and SOOM play a more nightmarish sound of Doom/Drone/Sludge Metal. Джєбарс has a high amount of Middle Eastern influences within the album.

Джєбарс truly comes alive when the dominant Sludge/Doom Metal riffs appear. As the album violently bursts into life with aggressive Punk/Sludge Metal sounds that cut right to the bone. It’s deeply unflinching and I admire SOOM’s vision for releasing a highly experimental album such as this.

Not everyone is going to enjoy this album. It’s perhaps for the more experimental Doom/Sludge Metal fan and not the casual observer. Джєбарс took me about 4 listens to fully admire and appreciate. Whilst I still have issues with certain parts of the album, I believe that Джєбарс is a complex, brave and bold album for SOOM to release.

The production feels flat but that’s perhaps down to the lo-fi environment SOOM have used for Джєбарс overall tone and atmosphere. SOOM are unapologetic with Джєбарс and I admire their bleak outlook on all things Doom/Sludge Metal.

Джєбарс is an album that I won’t be listening to all the time. As you need to be in a certain mood to listen the entire thing. However it’s an album that I won’t forget for a very long time. This is one of the most nightmarish and complex sounding albums I’ve heard this year."

Polish soulstonegathering.pl review by Tomasz Spiegolski:
"Soom to ukraińskie trio założone w 2013 roku, które na swoim koncie do 2017 miało już splity z Pressor i Diazepam, Ил oraz Вѣна (chcę słyszeć, jak próbujecie czytać te nazwy), EP „Жах і Огида” oraz długograj „Ніч на полонині” (hehe, no dobra: „Fear and Loathing” i „Night on the Meadow”).

Strona liryczna przedstawia opis drogi, jaką przemierza główny bohater — Djebars — podczas swojego psychodelicznego tripa.

Aha — to wszystko spinając klamrą iście blacksabbathowego tematu („Under a gleam the dream is hidden”). A to wszystko w samym „Poltavian Way”.

Ukrainian muzmapa.in.ua review:
"Оцінка: A+

Clocking in at 74 minutes this is not an easy album to take in. Mixing ambient with sludge with doom with metal with Ukrainian folk lore this is like a journey into the nethermost regions of the Ukraine psyche. Not an easy journey but a rewarding one if you can manage to stay the whole trip. Because this is a trip. This is the sort of album you need to sit back in the sofa for. You really have to invest 74 minutes of your life to just listening to this. No running around doing shore, no mocking about with the phone. Just pure 100% concentration on this album."

"It was just three months shy of a year when we brought you the premiere of fantastic fever dream of a record, ‘Джебарс’ (2018) aka Djebars, by Ukraine bulldozer SOOM. I spent hours chatting back and forth with the band about the fascinating lore behind the album, as well as peeling away the layers of meaning that were just beneath the surface of the language barrier. Suffice it say, it was one of my top spins of the year.

Now, the “slow machine of hate to soberness and impatience to objective reality” is back, as Soom presents us with their own vision of fear and loathing, shot in the heart of the city of Kharkiv. Frontman Oleksa Kovalov-Blidyi gives us insight into the meaning of Коляска “(Wheelchair)”:

“Made by Anastasia Khomenko, the video tells the surrealistic story of Djebars, who is stuck forever in the moment when the clock is working, but has stopped on a 19:36 mark. The story іs based upon a pale aesthetic. It is neither light, nor dark. It is simply immersed in its own Universe, the road to which lies through the search for a drug hiding place, via the use of a “wheelchair” — a term for bad quality synthetic drugs. For one person, it is self-destruction; for another, it is salvation. It just exists and there is must be no attitude towards it, just like anything else in the Universe, because everybody has their own way to All & Nothing. We see it like an ugly version of beauty. Let everyone of you see the same.”

If you need awhile to wrap your mind around that little riddle, this ten minute marvel will give you just enough to puzzle through it. By the way, does anybody have the time? 19:36, you say?

Excuse me, I do believe my train has arrived…

Doomed & Stoned kind words by Billy Goat:
"I've been fascinated by SOOM for many years, given the Ukraine band's penchant for experimentation (for example incorporating folk songs and unusual instruments on their albums). Their most recent work has them following the misadventures of one Djebars in their hometown of Kharkiv, as he follows has his own strange Alice in Wonderland experience with drugs and apparent madness. Today, Doomed & Stoned brings you the premiere of a brand new music video illustrating one of the bizarre chapters of the record."

liveeyetv.org the kind words about Wheelchair video & album:
"A soul crushing amalgam of dark ambient, heavy doom, psychedelic sludge, and Ukrainian folk. The kind of disorienting brew that should come with a health warning, this 74-minute long-player surprises at every turn."

seaoftranquility.org review by Jon Neudorf:
"Here is another interesting find, this time from the Ukraine. The band is Soom and I believe this album, titled Djebars, released in 2018 is their last album before disbanding in 2019. The music presented here is very experimental and overall, quite intense. Noise rock, doom, stoner, with tons of fuzz and distortion. The atmosphere exudes creepiness, imagine being fully immersed in a horror environment with no means of escape. The disc begins with “Above The Sequoias: Origin”, an intense creep fest of unsettled drones and eerie atmospheric moods. Very experimental and certainly meant to be listened to on headphones. Next, we have the ten plus minute “Burned Out”, filled with tension as the distortion rumbles and the riffs relentless in their frenzied attack. The doomy fuzz and distortion comes on thick and heavy with the sludgy, noise driven rock of “Under A Gleam The Dream Is Hidden”, a major tripped out listen that will transport you into the band’s skewed musical universe. The bass playing is as intense as it gets. The grinding freak outs continue as there are seven more tracks to explore.

It's weird, heavy, moody, and completely unorthodox and while not for everyone, those looking for a more experimental listen would do well to give this one a spin, and oh yeah, be prepared to be scared out of your mind.

The following labels were involved with this release: Robustfellow Prods, Voron Nest Records and the Addicted Label. "

thesoundprojector.com review by Ed Pinsent:
"Ukranian doom band album Soom have their album Dzhyebars (NO NAME) released on that broad-minded net label in Russia which has no name and was set up by Anton Kitaev and his friends in 2011. This combo execute a strange strain of haunted, melodic slow music which I think is being palmed off to us as something to do with their “ancient, mystical Ukranian folk” roots; whatever’s getting into their bones, it has inspired them to tear off some pretty anthemic throat-wobblers in places. The other side of their music is the more familiar heavy sludge that is the accepted lingua franca of this genre – low-tuned guitars, crushing drumbeats, hideous growled vocals, and grim feedback distortion through massive amps that packs a wallop to the torso of all who dare approach. While this album Dzhyebars certainly flattens the tarmac where it ought to, I find that Soom haven’t quite reconciled all the musical elements they wish to expound into a digestible whole; they fall one or two slopes short of the mythical mountain they wish to erect in their mind."
